Update. This DVD is now available here.

John, that is great. The main thing I would like to know about is how derek gets his tone and then the scales that he is using when he plays the solos over the blues stuff. I love that way of playing and I think you can help with that.

Thanks. I’m going to be covering the scales as intervals and what these mean over a slow blues. I’m going to post a video with lesson titles soon.

Hey John, regarding Derek Trucks I’d like some insight into his sans-slide playing as in the front end of his instrumentals on Rockin’ Horse and Desdemona, and in that order. I refer to the live ABB versions on youtube so that everyone can have access to the same versions for a reference. For slide, Derek’s climatic stuff above the 12th fret and how he incorporates legato.

John,
I am a huge Derek Trucks fan, so yes I will be interested in the new video.
I have purchased the “One Way Out” lesson and I am slowly learning all of the parts on the downloaded video. The video has worked extremely well in teaching me something I have wanted to learn for over 35 years. Needless to say I am a huge Duane Allman fan, personally I would like more lessons of Duanes tunes.
Keep up the good work.
Thanks,
Evan

I’ll be adding a couple bonus videos to go along with the DVD. More on that later.

Hey John,
I’ve really enjoyed and learned a lot from the firdt slide DVD and the Statesboro Blues, One Way Out and all the othe Allman tune lessons. I’m really into Derek right now and this will be a must that I will purchase. I’ve never really been able to figure out his tone. Also the way he incorporates the pakastani/indian style playing like on Sahib Teri Bandi/Maki Madni. Very interested to learn. Thanks for all you do with these lessons and continuing teach real, true music in such shitty music industry these days.
thanks,
William

Hi John,
For my playing and needs, I think you’re on the right track. I get the most use out of the example licks towards the end of the DVDs. I need to know how to play over different kinds of shuffles, slow blues, and some standards. The more I can “unlock” the fretboard and use all of it… the better. Sometimes I feel like I’m stuck .. (say in E) at the 10th, 12th, and 15th fret. I’d like to open it up more and use the whole fretboard. Maybe some licks that tie it all together. Email me if you want some examples of what I’m talking about.

I have been working on your blues video I just did get a cheep dobro to start work on slide but I would like to see some nice chords or jazzy blues kind of rythems to work on.

Hey John,
just a line to you ,just got the first two dvd’s , they look good .I am a old newbie
who keeps trying to learn the basics, for me the blues is the best way to play and keep learning I hope to keep practicing till it all fits for me on the fret board
I am done with wishing ,I have been practicing almost every day for over a year ,I own a fender guitar and a practice amp , after having used hard to play used guitars for a long time it’s nice to have a real instrument to play and I think may be it keeps me playing for the first time I feel like I can get to the point ,wow who is that playing . feeling ….. so keep up the good work Iam with the rest of the comments on what to add ,for me its transition from single notes back to chords that fit in the key . slides are good ..
thanks for reaching out to teach in this media

For me, I love Derek’s older stuff so much more than the “world music” thing he does now. I love everything he does, but I miss the dark and dirty delta sound he used to (back in ‘94-’95) play so much. Like when he would break off into a solo with a delta slide sound/going into amazing grace/into sleepwalk/then back into the blues jam with the band… That’s the Derek I really love. “Amazing Grace” is rather easy, but I am still working on “Sleepwalk”.
As far as personal preference goes with newer stuff, I would LOVE to learn the solo off of “Instrumental Illness” from the live at the Beacon Dvd as well as his solo off of “Whipping Post” off the same Dvd!
John, I just want to say thank you for doing these dvd’s. When my dad died about a year and a half ago is when I decided to pick up a guitar again. It was roughly around that time I “stumbled” on your first slide dvd. I have purchased three more dvd’s since and will continue to but everything you make. These dvd’s have opened up doors for me that probably would have taken years to open on my own. My dad raised me on the Allman Brothers and pretty much noone else, so this is a real treat to learn the slide parts that most people can’t or don’t think they can ever play!!!

I’d love to learn the riff that he does when he is returning to the root. he does it a lot in the song Joyful Noise. It’s kind of a thing he does when he is moving from one phrase to another but he always returns to the root in a more complicated way than duane allman did, and I can hear it but I can’t quite make out what is going on. thanks man.

Derek’s version of “Key to the highway” off Songlines Live DVD is pretty sick. I’d love to learn that.

Hey John,
You are a great player and a great teacher. I would like to hear what you have to say about slide in standard tuning. It is not always covenient for me to change guitars or change tunings. I understand that Warren Haynes and maybe Mick Taylor play standard tuning slide.

Thanks for all the comments.
@ Richard Anderson I will be creating a slide guitar DVD in standard Tuning early next year.
@Warren Mann This is one of my favorite songs on that DVD. I might dedicate a whole lesson to that entire song at some point.
@John Youngblood Yeah that has some killer licks in it.
@Lathan Hites Glad I could help with your slide playing. Sorry to hear about your Dad.
Just in case you missed the new video preview, you can check it out here.

John; thanks for the opportunity to provide input on your next DVD! I will check out the previews and provide input on what I am looking for; basically as I improvise I am trying to be more melodic using the different scales. When I listen to Derek Trucks or Warren Haynes; their slide work over non-blues music has such a sweet sound. Examples: the work Derek Trucks does on “High Cost for Low Living’ on the Allman Brothers “One Way Out’” CD and “So Far Away” from the “Joyful Noise” CD; “Anyday”; some of the runs he performs on these songs are an interest. Also; if you listen to some of the live tracks where warren Haynes is playing the slide on “Blue Sky” with Dickey Betts. My music theory is not strong; so I am not clear on when to use the Major; Myxalodian, Blues or a combination. As far as the Major scale goes; your DVD teaches this in the key of C; I am assuming you can use that in the different Keys; but you just adjust to the proper key and frets associated with that key; is this correct? One more thing; I learned some of the licks to Ka-ma- Lay; a lot of licks go from 6-8 6-4-3 4-6-3; I hear this a lot in Trucks songs; is this a different scale or a combination? Sorry I am asking for a lot, but you asked; I can’t tell you how beneficial your work is; I am really enjoying playing again!
