Learn how to play a BB King Style blues guitar lick. Podcast 32

In this weeks video podcast, I’m going to show you how to play a blues guitar lick in the style of BB King. I’ve been watching a DVD from him called, “BB King Live in Africa”, and this is a lick I kinda picked up from Sweet Sixteen.

That DVD is amazing and contains some of the best blues guitar licks you will ever find. The whole band is really tight, and they just groove like no other blues band can. You can really see why he is “King of the Blues” in this video.

Slide Guitar Lesson Podcast 27: Learn Derek Trucks

In this weeks podcast, I’m going to break down a slide guitar lick used by Derek Trucks in the song “Key to the Highway” from the Songlines DVD.

The solo he plays in this song is nothing short of brilliant. Derek effectively manages to blend the Major, Minor, and Blues Scales together to form a very melodic vocal-esque slide guitar solo.

Notice the use of dynamics, phrasing, space, and melody in this solo. Only a true blues man possesses the power of restraint during a solo.

You’ll notice he’ll leave quite a bit of space between the phrases at the beginning points of the solo. Anyway, in this podcast I show you the intro lick used in this solo in open e tuning.
